06 Feb Males and HPV
HPV, or Human Papillomavirus, infection is a viral infection that’s commonly associated with Cervical Cancer. However, the fact is that there are over 100 varieties of HPV that can cause various kinds of cancer not only in women, but also in men.
Males and HPV
Contrary to popular belief that HPV only causes cancer in women, the fact is that men can also develop cancer from certain strains of this virus. However, while getting an HPV infection does not mean that it will lead to cancer, the infection can cause the disease. This is why it is important to know what causes it, the symptoms, and most importantly, the preventive measures that men can take.
HPV infections, which often cause few or no symptoms in men, are common among those who are sexually active. The infection can go away on its own, as the immune system usually controls this infection. However, what’s important to know is that if the infection persists it can cause various kinds of cancer and warts.
Kinds of cancer caused by HPV in men
HPV can cause various kinds of cancer in men, which include:
- Penile cancer
- Anal cancer
- Oropharyngeal cancer (the back of the throat, which includes the base of the tongue and tonsils)
Men need to seek medical support if they develop any growth, warts, sores or lumps in the penis, anus, scrotum, mouth, or throat.
