06 Feb Prevention of HPV related cancers in men
The good news is that cancers caused by an HPV infection are mostly preventable through vaccination. The vaccine can protect men from certain HPV-related cancers and warts.
Ideally, men (and women) should have been vaccinated before they have sexual intercourse for the first time.
HPV vaccination
The HPV vaccine needs to be given to children at an early age. It is recommended for the below:
- Preteens in the ages 9-14
- Two doses of the vaccine are given about 6 to 12 months apart.
- If not vaccinated already, young adults till the age of 26 years can take the vaccine. However, those who take the vaccine between the ages 15 and 26 years need three doses of the vaccine.
- Usually, vaccination for men (and women) older than 26 years is not recommended. That said, some men in the ages of between 27 and 45 can speak to their physicians to know if they should take the vaccine or not.
Bottom line is, HPV related cancers are largely preventable with the vaccination. Those who have not taken it and are in the right category must consult with their physician and take the vaccine as recommended.
