18 Mar A Teacher’s Journey to Awareness: Soniya Rawat’s Story
Background
Soniya Rawat, a dedicated school teacher, has always prioritized the well-being of her students and family. Living in Neb Sarai Enclave, Delhi, with her husband, Pushkar Rawat, a software engineer, she leads a busy life balancing work and home responsibilities.
Like many women, health check-ups were often pushed aside in the daily hustle. However, a recent encounter with an ASHA worker changed her perspective.
A few days before the screening camp, Soniya heard from an ASHA worker in her locality that a Cancer Awareness & Screening Camp was being set up nearby. The worker emphasized how crucial early screening is, especially for diseases like breast cancer, cervical cancer, and oral cancer. Initially, Soniya hesitated-she felt healthy, and the thought of medical tests made her nervous. But the ASHA worker’s words stayed with her, and after discussing it with her husband, she decided to attend.
“Women often ignore their own health, focusing on their families first. But this camp felt like an opportunity to take a step towards self-care,” she recalls.
On the day of the camp, Soniya walked into the screening area with curiosity and a little apprehension. The CAPED NGO team greeted her warmly and guided her through the process. She was impressed by how smoothly everything was conducted. The screenings were free of cost, well-organized, and informative, making her feel comfortable and at ease.
During the check-up, she underwent tests for breast cancer, cervical cancer, and oral cancer. The medical staff also shared valuable information about early symptoms, preventive measures, and the importance of regular check-ups. The session was an eye-opener for Soniya.
“I never realized how common these cancers are and how easily they can be detected early. The knowledge CAPED provided was invaluable,” she says.
After completing the screenings, Soniya received her results-a clean bill of health. A wave of relief washed over her, but more than that, she felt empowered. She had taken control of her health, and now she wanted to encourage others to do the same.
“I urge every woman to take these tests. Cancer is spreading rapidly, and early detection can save lives. Don’t wait for symptoms-get screened for your safety and well-being,” she shares passionately.
Soniya’s story is a reminder that awareness and action go hand in hand. Through CAPED’s initiative, she not only gained medical insights but also become an advocate for early cancer screening in her community.
As she left the camp that day, she carried with her not just relief but a newfound mission-to spread the word and encourage more women to prioritize their health.
